Honouring Gerry Smith

Donnybrook would like to honour Gerry Smith, a great Canadian fiddle player and supporter of the fiddle and step dance circut, who passed away suddenly on June 20th, 2017. Gerry was a pillar in the fiddling community, and won many titles over the years at various competitions. He also mentored many fine fiddle players of today; Shane Cook, Devon Martene, Ashley Giles and Jeff Miller – who had the privilege of learning from Gerry, and sharing music with him. Gerry also crafted many fiddle tunes for stepdancers over the years, was a constant source of encouragement to all, and a role model to many.

A quote from his daughter, Linda:
“Gerry loved fiddling. It was his life.”

Gerry played an important role in the 1st Annual Donnybrook Fiddle & Step Dance Competition as one of our original fiddle judges back in 2004. We welcomed him back over the years to judge, as pictured here in 2009. He and his wife always made the trek from Exeter to be part of the crowd.

Thanks Gerry, your memory lives on.
